A NEW IDEA IS BORN FOR AN OPEN-AIR MUSEUM
In 2008 the first open-air museum dedicated to
organic olive oil was created inside the production site in Custonaci. This initiative
was created through a close collaboration with the University of Palermo's
Department of Agricultural Science, in particular with the department of
Arboreal Cultivation, and the result of extensive and arduous research efforts
over a span of ten years.
Approximately 230 olive tress are included in
the project: 190 of the Cerasuola variety, a local cultivar by the same
name, the minimum number provisioned by DOP Valli Trapanasi requirements.
The other 40 trees are extremely rare, selected
from various varieties that have thrived in Sicily since the birth of the olive tree to
today. The objective of this experiment is to protect the germplasm, the
precious genetic heritage of the Sicilian olive tree.
